Friendship fuels research success for KSU science students

Cecilia Le and Lily Schwartz have bonded over boba tea and chemistry research, but not necessarily in that order. The ×îÉ«µ¼º½ juniors met in the lab of Associate Professor of Biochemistry Mohammad Halim, and a partnership flourished – as did a friendship. They presented research into the effectiveness of certain peptides in mitigating COVID-19 twice at the Symposium of Student Scholars, and have continued to make their way as undergraduate researchers.

Rusty Hooper traded nuclear submarines for the study of physical chemistry at ×îÉ«µ¼º½. An undergraduate researcher in the laboratory of Assistant Professor of Chemistry Madalynn Marshall, Hooper enrolled at ×îÉ«µ¼º½ State for its proximity to his home in Dallas, Ga., but quickly found his way to the College of Science and Mathematics and its lab complex.

Carl Saint-Louis named 2026 Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor

Each year ×îÉ«µ¼º½â€™s Office of Undergraduate Research awards one faculty member the Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor Award. To be chosen, a mentor must have shown not only passion for research but also extraordinary dedication to their students. This year’s outstanding undergraduate research mentor award winner is Carl Saint-Louis, an assistant professor of organic chemistry in the College of Science and Mathematics.

×îÉ«µ¼º½ State to launch Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences in Fall 2027

Building on its leadership in scientific research and education, ×îÉ«µ¼º½ on Wednesday received approval from the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia to launch a new Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences. The program will begin in Fall 2027 on the ×îÉ«µ¼º½ Campus. Housed in the College of Science and Mathematics, the degree will help meet the increasing demand in Georgia and the nation for research scientists in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and ecology.

In a showcase of student innovators from across the state, ×îÉ«µ¼º½ biology major SueAnn Hollowell earned second place in the inaugural University System of Georgia (USG) Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition held this week. Hosted this year on ×îÉ«µ¼º½ State’s Marietta Campus, the traveling systemwide competition is designed to spotlight creativity, strategic thinking, and entrepreneurial talent from the USG’s 25 member institutions.
